As university professors, we seem to find ourselves having the same conversation with different students time and time again. What if we could leverage our time and clone ourselves? What if we could be available to our students whenever and wherever they wanted us, virtually?

Technology offers such a solution with the creation of the blog. Think of the blog as technology that tutors 24/7. Welcome to the world of the blog where some of our efforts as a professor are now scalable. Learn how you can create a video (with transcript), embed on your blog, and simply provide the link to your students as the need or topic may arise in class discussions.

Please join Dr. Cheryl Lentz on this journey as she offers a path to shorten your learning curve with increased efficiency in teaching methods as we look to the blog with 7 ways to save time by using the blog as a teaching tool.

The Consumer Learner: Emerging Expectations of a Customer Service Mentality in Post-Second

124 pages; 2012

Anyone who has entered a college classroom in the last five years has recognized a clear transformation in the context of higher education. A dynamic revolution in practice and delivery is underway, and the implications of multi-faceted change are ripe for analysis.

Administrators are increasingly charged with revenue production and institutional leadership. Faculty are experimenting with new andragogical models and advances in interactive technology. Students are embracing new modalities, as they strive to make curriculum immediately transferrable into industry. The Consumer Learner: Emergence and Expectations of a Customer Service Mentality in Post-Secondary Education examines the new reality and emerging patterns shaping the experiences of these three diverse, yet interconnected, constituencies.

This book provides a distinctive approach to the transformation of the higher education culture within the United States. Authors Dr. Gillian Silver and Dr. Cheryl Lentz, noted content experts, professors and curriculum/program developers, explain the contents will initiate an intensive dialogue about the implications and impacts on administrative structure, faculty practice, and learner outcomes.

Three population segments within the educational spectrum—each with their own compelling vantage point—are considered:

• Administrators who strive to create a cost recovery model for private and public education systems that are undergoing a complex transition in product creation, delivery and experience
• Full and part-time faculty who are struggling to bring pertinent content to learners displaced by the economy who are eager for self-development, and often times, impatient with the perceived complexities of the educational system
• Students who want immediately transferable content that enhances employment opportunity and stability, and the self-confidence benefits of tackling an ambitious goal of degree completion.

“Drawing on the common mission of preparing adults for success, the content acknowledges there is a level of bias and incongruency present in all three frames. Essentially, no one element of the educational triad can independently address the opportunities without consideration of the other partners’ perspectives,” says Dr. Silver. Dr. Lentz continues, explaining “This is a frank, encompassing work which has the capacity to ignite a national dialogue. We think the review will give voice to the significance of this evolving environment. The voices of experience leading this change will emerge.”

The Refractive Thinker®: Vol: VII: Social Responsibility

256 pages; 2012

13 chapters (click for chapter list and summaries)

Thank you for joining us for the Spring 2012 edition as we continue to celebrate the accomplishments of doctoral educators affiliated with many phenomenal institutions of higher learning. The purpose of this next offering within the anthology series is to share current research from these participating authors, specifically on the topic of social responsibility. Our goal is to add to our quest as refractive thinkers, and to ask the question: what is the purpose of the doctoral scholar? In this edition of the award-winning series, we offer many answers for contemplative thought.

This peer-reviewed resource provides a framework to discuss social responsibility from the perspective of the doctoral scholar. Topics for discussion include an expectation of the lifelong learner, challenges for empowering women, influence of women leaders and entrepreneurs, generational conflict, value of innovative leadership practices, succession planning, public trust, the role of elite athletes, the role of stakeholders, the role of technology and social irresponsibly from the perspective of sustainability. Further, these topics reflect the construct of the refractive thinker where each author challenged the conventional wisdom and expanded beyond traditional boundaries. These authors dared to think not only outside of the box, but also beyond. Instead, the discussion continues to evolve, exploring entirely new ideas for construction of ‘the box.’
In addition to exploring various aspects of social responsibility, the purpose of The Refractive Thinker® is to serve the tenets of leadership. This is not simply a concept outside of the self, but comes from within, defining our very essence. The search becomes a personal journey of the lifelong learner, not yet a finite destination.

The Refractive Thinker® is an intimate expression of who we are—the ability to think beyond the traditional boundaries of thinking and critical thinking. Instead of mere reflection and evaluation, one challenges the very boundaries of the constructs itself. If thinking is inside the box, and critical thinking is outside the box, we add the next step of refractive thinking, beyond the box. Perhaps the need exists to dissolve the box completely. As in our first six volumes, the authors within these pages are on a mission to change the world through scholarly research. Refractive thinkers are never satisfied or quite content with what is or asking why; instead these authors intentionally strive to push and test the limits to ask why not.

Effective Study Skills in 5 Simple Steps

42 pages; 2011

Dr. Cheryl Lentz has compiled the valuable information she gives in her blog in one easy to use handbook. The study tips are designed to help any student improve learning and understanding, and ultimately earn higher grades. The handbook is not so large that it requires long hours of reading as is the case with many books on the subject. The information is written in a manner to help a learner ‘see’ and ‘practice’ proven study techniques. Effective study skills must be practiced to improve.

This book is currently only in e-Book format.

PREFACE

I think therefore I am. --Rene Descartes
I critically think to be.
I refractively think to change the world.

Welcome to The Refractive Thinker®: Volume IV: Ethics, Leadership, and Globalization.

Thank you for joining us for the first 2010 edition, Volume IV as we continue to celebrate the accomplishments of these doctoral scholars affiliated with many phenomenal institutions of higher learning. The purpose of this next offering in the anthology series is to share yet another glimpse into the scholarly works of these authors, specifically on the topics of ethics, leadership, and concerns within the global landscape of business.

In addition to exploring various aspects of ethics and globalization, the purpose of The Refractive Thinker® is also to serve the tenets of leadership. Leadership is not simply a concept outside of the self, but comes from within, defining our very essence; where the search to define leadership becomes our personal journey not yet a finite destination. In the words of Dr. Thomas Woodruff (2009) “Change has no conclusion” (RT: Vol. III, p. 213).

As in our first three volumes, the authors within these pages are on a mission to change the world, never satisfied or quite content with what is or asking why, instead these authors intentionally strive to push and test the limits to ask why not. Join us on this next adventure of The Refractive Thinker® where Volume IV continues the discussion specifically themed to explore the realm of ethics, leadership, and globalization. This offers yet another bite of the apple from the tree of knowledge upon an ever expanding canvas from which these authors choose to cast their paint, envisioning new horizons in which to move forward and explore the future.

I invite you to join with me as we venture forward to showcase these authors of Volume IV. The goal is to offer a chance to bring to publication more ideas for which the audience may be interested in the expertise and guidance that they offer.

Please contact The Refractive Thinker® Press for further information regarding these authors and the works contained within these pages. Perhaps you or your organization may be looking for their expertise to incorporate as part of your annual corporate meetings as a key note or guest speaker(s), perhaps to offer individual or group seminars or coaching, or require their expertise as consultants.

The Refractive Thinker®: Vol V: Strategy in Innovation

PREFACE

I think therefore I am. –Renee Descartes
I critically think to be.
I refractively think to change the world.

Welcome to The Refractive Thinker®: Volume V: Strategy in Innovation

Thank you for joining us for the Fall 2010 edition, Volume V as we continue to celebrate the accomplishments of doctoral scholars affiliated with many phenomenal institutions of higher learning. The purpose of this offering in the anthology series is to share another glimpse into the scholarly works of these participating authors, specifically on the topic strategic thought in innovation.
In addition to exploring various aspects of innovation, the purpose of The Refractive Thinker® is to serve the tenets of leadership. Leadership is not simply a concept outside of the self, but comes from within, defining our very essence; where the search to define leadership becomes our personal journey not yet a finite destination.

As in our first four volumes, the authors within these pages are on a mission to change the world, never satisfied or quite content with what is or asking why, instead these authors intentionally strive to push and test the limits to ask why not.

Peter Senge (1994) in his book, The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook wrote
Herein lies the strongest reason to look for tools based on important new theories: only such tools have the power to change how we think. Most tools introduced into management to solve problems, however innovative they may be, are based on conventional ways of thinking . . . To paraphrase Albert Einstein, our present problems cannot be solved at the level of thinking at which they were created (Senge, 1994, p. 31).

This argument offers yet another perspective that supports that when “relying on our present ways of thinking, it is very difficult to develop tools that change the way of thinking. For this we must find or generate new theory” (Senge, 1994, p. 31). This is what these authors of Volume V aim to accomplish—The goal of Volume V authors is to use refractive thinking to discover new ways of looking at current or old ideas, new ways, and new structure for learning and contemplation. The goals of this volume are to offer alternatives these authors choose to take and to share with you their reasons why to translate this understanding into innovations in theory.

Join us on this next adventure of The Refractive Thinker® where Volume V continues the discussion specifically begun in Volume I with leadership, II with Research Methodology, III with Change Management, and IV Ethics, Leadership, and Globalization themed to explore the realm of strategic thought, creativity, and innovation.

Please contact The Refractive Thinker® Press for further information regarding these authors and the works contained within these pages. Perhaps you or your organization may be looking for their expertise to incorporate as part of your annual corporate meetings as a key note or guest speaker(s), perhaps to offer individual, or group seminars or coaching, or require their expertise as consultants.

We look forward to your interest in discussing future opportunities. Let this collection of authors continue our journey begun with volume I to which The Refractive Thinker® will serve as our guide to future volumes. The Refractive Thinker®: Vol I An Anthology of Higher Learning

186 pages; 2009

10 chapters (click for chapter list and summaries)

PREFACE

Welcome to The Refractive Thinker®: An Anthology of Higher Learning. Thank you for joining us on our maiden voyage to celebrate the accomplishments of these doctoral scholars affiliated with the University of Phoenix School of Advanced Studies.

The purpose of this anthology is to offer a glimpse into the scholarly works of these authors. The intent is to provide a forum for them to share their thoughts and expertise as they contribute to the expanse of knowledge in pursuit of the tenets and philosophies of higher learning.

The title of this book, The Refractive Thinker® was chosen intentionally to highlight the ability of these doctoral scholars to bend thought, to converge its very essence on the ability to obliquely pass through the perspective of another. The goal is to ask and ponder the right questions; to dare to think differently, to find new applications within unique and cutting edge dimensions, ultimately to lead where others may follow or to risk forging perhaps a new path all entirely.

Leaders ultimately change the world simply by questioning the very process of thought and life itself. They are insatiably curious, never satisfied or content with what is, always looking to the horizon and asking the fundamental question of why— with the goal to perhaps arrive at a better place than where they began—forever changed by the very act of asking questions. They dare to question themselves and ask why not? And what can they do to be an agent of change? The Refractive Thinker® offers this discourse, a place where these authors offer a chapter of their work so the audience can sample a mere bite of the apple with the hope of being given a broader canvas from which to paint further.

I invite you to join with me as we venture forward to showcase these authors of the first edition with our eye toward future editions as a forum to share more of the esteemed work of these colleagues and future authors. The goal is to offer a chance to bring to publication more ideas from which the audience may be interested in the expertise and guidance that they offer.

Please contact me for further information regarding these authors and the works contained within these pages. Perhaps your organization may be looking for their expertise to incorporate as part of your annual corporate meetings as a key note or guest speaker(s), perhaps to offer individual or group seminars, or require their expertise as consultants.

We look forward to your interest in discussing future opportunities. Let this be our beginning to which The Refractive Thinker® will serve as our guide to this and future editions.

The Refractive Thinker®: Vol II Research Methodology

264 pages; 2009

10 chapters (click for chapter list and summaries)

PREFACE

Thank you for joining us for Volume II to celebrate the accomplishments of these doctoral scholars affiliated with the University of Phoenix School of Advanced Studies. The purpose of this anthology is to offer a glimpse into the scholarly works of these authors, specifically within the world of research methodology. The purpose is to provide a resource that is beyond the boundaries of a textbook with regard to the doctoral dissertation. Part I for example is a Delphi Primer—three different author’s interpretations and application of the Delphi Method—all unique, all within the vein of The Refractive Thinker® where each challenged the conventional wisdom and expanded the traditional boundaries. These authors dared to not just think outside of the box. Instead the box continues to evolve into exploring nearly entirely new ideas for the construction of ‘the box’ i.e. the applicable methodology. Along the same lines, Part II includes elements of the Mixed Methodology, Part III: Qualitative Techniques, and Part IV includes Quantitative Techniques. The last section, Emerging Methods, builds upon this refractive thinking® by offering an entirely new research methodology for consideration.

In addition to exploring various research methodologies, the purpose of The Refractive Thinker® is also to serve the tenets of leadership. Leadership is not simply a concept outside of the self, but comes from within, defining our very essence; where the search to define leadership becomes our personal journey not yet a finite destination.

The Refractive Thinker® is an intimate expression of who we are—the ability to think beyond the traditional boundaries of thinking and critical thinking. Join us on this next adventure of The Refractive Thinker® where Volume II continues the discussion specifically themed for this volume to explore the wonders of research methodology. This offers yet another bite of the apple from the tree of knowledge upon an ever expanding canvas from which these authors choose to cast their paint, envisioning new horizons in which to move forward and explore in the future.

New to this volume is the edition of a Peer Review Board, comprised of both content experts as well as those well versed in the style of APA format. While the purpose of this board was to offer additional layers of editing to enhance the brilliance of the ideas put forth by these authors, the final version for each chapter was at the discretion of each to preserve the integrity and authenticity of their individual work.

I invite you to join with me as we venture forward to showcase these authors of Volume II. The goal is to offer a chance to bring to publication more ideas for which the audience may be interested in the expertise and guidance that they offer.
